Cook at US Embassy in Ankara extradited to US

An American cook working at the US Embassy in Ankara who was on the run after being convicted of 26 counts of fraud in the US was detained by Turkish security forces recently and extradited to the US.
Thirty-four-year-old Carlos Enrique Rodriguez, who is of Brazilian descent, was convicted of 26 counts of fraud dating from 2006 to 2008 while living in Tampa in Florida, the Hürriyet daily reported on Monday. He married 27-year-old F.R., a Turkish citizen, who traveled to the US for vacation in August 2008. Hiding his crimes from his Turkish wife, he was tried in absentia and sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2008. A warrant for his arrest was sent to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa. However, by that time, Rodriguez had assumed fake identities and was constantly changing his location. Police officers were unable to find him, and after the court ruling, Rodriguez explained the situation to his wife and told her that they should flee to Turkey.
Traveling under the alias “Carlos Sakazar,” Rodriguez came to Turkey in January 2009 with his wife. Settling down in a luxury house in the Ümitköy district of Ankara, Rodriguez started to look for a job. Having worked in some restaurants in the United States, Rodriguez prepared a fake cooking certificate and applied to the US Embassy in Ankara for a position as a cook. Following a security screening, the embassy hired Rodriguez, paying him $4,500 a month.
Rodriguez’s past was uncovered when the CIA conducted background checks of embassy employees last month, discovering that Rodriguez was using fake information and a fake name. Contacting the Ankara Police Department, the CIA asked police to detain Rodriguez. He was successfully detained and extradited to the US.
